Life in this town in the center of the Prairie State is a mix of historical and modern. With beautiful state government buildings and the trail of Lincoln’s history in Springfield, the easy charm of a simpler time makes Springfield unique. However, it’s important to remember that in this day and age, there are many ways to protect against the current threat to public health, the spread of sexually transmitted disease. Knowing the risk factors and when to get tested is vital information. Anyone sexually active who has never been tested before, anyone who recently had unprotected sex, anyone in a relationship with an STD-positive partner who has yet to get tested and anyone who fears they might have been exposed to an STD should get tested as soon as possible.

According to the CDC, all STDs can be treated and many can be cured, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and trichomoniasis. However, left untreated, these conditions that can be cured with antibiotics can cause more serious medical complications, including infertility.6&7 Sexually transmitted diseases that do not have a cure, like HIV, certain forms of viral hepatitis and genital herpes, can be managed with medicine to greatly improve the quality of life for those affected. Getting the answers about your status, no matter what the infection, is an important step on the road to recovery.

STD Testing and Sexual Education in Springfield

As of January 2014, Illinois state law mandates that if sexual education is taught in a public school setting, the curriculum must be age-appropriate, medically accurate and cover both abstinence and the various methods of safe sex. This balanced approach for students grades 6-12 helps to start an important conversation about the variety of methods to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and unintended pregnancy. In the state of Illinois as well as all across the country, the youth population is at high risk for contracting sexually transmitted disease in large numbers, for a variety of factors.5&12

According to the CDC, young people ages 15-24 are estimated to account for nearly 10 million sexually transmitted diseases in the United States each year (out of nearly 20 million total). Certain populations, like young women, are especially vulnerable. The CDC recommends that sexually active young women (and older women with risk factors) get tested annually for chlamydia. While biology does play a factor, worries about disclosing sexual behavior to medical professional as well as multiple sex partners at this age also increases the likelihood of young people contracting STDs.7
